I worked at AmeriCorps full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Amazing experience! I met so many great people and learned a lot of valuable skills that can be used in any position.

Cons

Living stipend is very meager so you will need to apply for food stamps and possibly have financial support from family (unless your living arrangements are provided).

I worked at AmeriCorps part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours with school and being able to freely work like a teacher with groups of students without restrictions.

    Cons

Pay was subpar and we could sometimes be called into action unexpectedly for overtime.

    Advice to Management

Strategically place your mentors and participants in areas of the U.S. that are more in need.

I worked at AmeriCorps full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good cause, but horrible execution

    Cons

I was chosen to be an AmeriCorps Vista member by an org. However, AmeriCorps would not let me work for them because at the time I lived 40 minutes away from where I worked. I was the best member for this assignment by far, but they were interested in immersion: aka my experience rather than what is best for the people I would have been serving.

    Advice to Management

First of all, get better at communicating. No where was I told about the distance requirement. Second of all, realize that this program should be about helping real people in need, not teaching rich kids what it is like to be poor.
