I worked at American Cancer Society full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Great mission, great co-workers and volunteers.

Cons

Many in management were unqualified. Their primary qualification was seniority.

Advice to Management

Be more innovative, move faster and get out of the way of talented people so they can do their job.

    Pros

Awesome mission, awesome employees, awesome volunteers, the ability to really make a difference in cancer patients lives!

    Cons

If you are not a YES man/woman...then forget about it. Going through 'transformation' but upper managment/executive leadership already knew who they were going to hire. Alarming number of people hired outside the organization when wonderful and experienced current employees have not secured jobs. Executive leadership have a hard time thinking outside the box. People in executive leadership positions that have zero experience in the area that they have been placed..but their jobs were saved because they are politically connected.

    Advice to Management

Hire from within, ask questions and when you get answers dont think of them as challenging the norm but acutally trying to make things better. Dont hire current staff just because you want to 'save' them.
