I worked at American Cancer Society full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I worked for the organization for 11 years.
Great Mission, Great passion from the volunteers. The services that we provided for cancer patients were localized and had a great impact on the wellbeing of the community. I worked with a great group of people who understood our impact.

    Cons

Transformation is a disaster. They are taking away the localization and hometown feeling of the offices.
Leadership was not aways qualified for their positions - promotions were not based on knowledge and measured performance outcomes
Review system was subjective. performance measurability was easy in income development but difficult in other areas

    Advice to Management

Take a look at the "divisions" see which ones were the most successful and transform to that structure. Do not use a siloed structure for your event managers and make sure that the people you are placing in the new positions have experience and have been successful. Expecting someone to manage an event from 150 + miles away is crazy!
