Positive Outlook

I have been working at American Century Investments as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Relaxed work environment, friendly people, valuable learning experience.

Cons

Headquarters location is not necessarily in the best place, but that's subjective. Personally, I'm not too big of a fan of the midwest, but others may think differently.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at American Century Investments full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Better culture than most employers
    Clear corporate strategy
    Generally bright, professional staff
    Excellent benefits

    Cons

An inconsistency in the culture has developed in recent years. Some departments remain true to the Guiding Principles, other areas have not. A once consistent, influential HR department no longer has the staff required to assist and guide leadership in the execution of a consistent culture. As a result, an employee may experience anything from a remarkable to a less than optimal working environement.

    Advice to Management

The new emphasis on meritocracy is appropriate, but execution has fallen short. HR staff must be adequate to ensure leadership's execution is kept in check.

  2. "In this economy, not a bad place to work, but can be very political depending on a team."

    Pros

Good benefits; pleasant work environment; steady information flow from top managers; the firm is growing which should create opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Relative to investment firms of the same size, the pay is so-so. Depending on the investment team, the company can be very political -- some managers clearly play favorites. Bonuses are capped.

    Advice to Management

Criticism for mistakes is dished out more generously than praise for achievements -- this should be changed.
