I worked at American Diabetes Association as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Nonprofit organization trying to spread awareness and fund research for Diabetes. They try hard to put on events that would bring about awareness in an interactive setting.

Cons

Upper level management is extremely hard on managers to meet quotas from big fundraising events. Sometimes, this can cause tension in the work place that brings down the atmosphere.

Advice to Management

Ease up and understand the difficulties of the current economic situation. Find more proactive solutions instead of just pressure and threats. Be more open to new ideas for different projects.

    Pros

The employees are very loyal to the cause and mission.
The ADA attempts to use modern technology as a tool to meet organizational objectives

    Cons

Very strong top-down chain of command throughout the whole organization.
The local level has not autonomy to determine projects not given the tools to achieve the handed-down objectives.

    Advice to Management

The ADA (and more importantly people with diabetes) can be better served if the local organization (office / chapter) had more autonomy over the program and activities withing their territory,
