I have been working at American Express full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Lots of opportunities to grow your career. Lots of flexibility to find the right role for your long term objectives. Promotions are merit based. Work life balance is exceptional. Core credit card business is exceptionally well run.

Cons

Huge corporate bureaucracy and meeting based culture means getting things done is challenging. Pay is below competition and longevity at American Express means your pay will fall significantly below your peers, thus poaching from top banks is rampant

I have been working at American Express full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a large company with a lot of interesting technology. Looks good on your resume. Thats a good thing because you will always be thinking about leaving.

    Cons

So many internal services are outsourced that it is very difficult to get anything done well or in a reasonable period of time. It is frowned upon to mention this. I've really never seen anything like it.
Low salaries. Extensive offshoring means US salaries are driven down and quality of work for offshore is much lower than most onshore. But it's cheap which is all anyone seems to care about.
It's never hit me but there are often reorgs with good people losing their jobs for no apparent reason. This makes everyone nervous whenever there is a change and alot of people always have one eye on the next job as a result.

    Advice to Management

I'm quite sure management is not interested in my advice or most other employees.
