    Pros

    - Bright people
    - Fantastic brand
    - Great new President in Consumer services
    - Sincere focus on community involvement
    Top notch people work here. Smart, bright. Capable. Well educated. Beyond that, the brand is one that everyone should be proud to be associated with. Great name to have on the resume. Fantastic location.

    Cons

    - Declining morale within Consumer Services
    - Disappointing politics, passive aggressive nature culture
    - Focus on 'perception' rather than 'results driven'
    New President within Consumer Services has created a needed spark, with an encouraging and unique mantra. However, many of the same leadership remains as before - and a significant culture change is impossible with the majority of same leadership in place. The politics has simply shifted focus from what mattered before, to what matters now according to the new President. A lot of great talent looking outside company. It's a shame, as I believe the company's advantage has always been its people.

    Advice to Management

    Enforcing a radically new culture is impossible with the same leadership in place. This is hardly a case study not seen by any MBA student. Selecting/promoting current leadership who embodies the ideals sought is the first step. But the second step is pushing aside the majority of the leadership who does not, and the politics that come with it. Hard decisions await, but on precipice of radical industry shift - change is needed both in vision and the people there to execute it with the new culture that would be required.

    I have been working at American Express full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    It is a great company with good work life balance. The senior leadership is really nice. The benefits are decent and we get a lot of time off which is great. You can move around the planet which I have been able to do. Finally, you can have multiple careers in sales, marketing and finance if you so wish too which keeps things interesting.

    Cons

    It can be a little too NY centric in Senior Management which can limit careers for those living in other large cities. Also the benefits while OK could be better especially medical and dental. Also some of the more recent acquisitions have not been the best and we are dealing with those issues now.
