I have been working at American Express full-time (More than a year)

Pros

large company, interesting challenges
oportunities for sideways moves
good benefits
relaxed atmosphere

Cons

little chance of promotion
average pay
poor senior manaement

Advice to Management

-look who among you is only after their career and not the company - we have wasted months on projects no one wants to make someone look good
-and realise there are issues - some VP's refuse to admit it

    Pros

Focus on leadership development, Diversity, and person development

    Cons

Sometimes slow to make big decisions, too much focus on consensus, etc

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on employee survey results, keep the focus on leadership development, and push for more cross-business moves.

I have been working at American Express full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Mat Leave and Pat leave programs are very good...
blue works is a great program for those with 60+ min commutes
    Tons of lateral movements available
Its like an extension of college - you will continue to learn and gain skill sets as your career progresses
American express is an incredible brand to be associated with and you will get to focus on the customer and have a tangible effect on the customer.

    Cons

depending on who your leader is, that work life balance culture that Amex preaches by can be affected...
compensation is barely keeping up with the cost of living, especially in NY...
Political game play is always an issue...
its very difficult to grow and follow a career path if you are focused on a particular part of the business. To be successful you must be willing to take any job in the company at any point regardless of your interest.

    Advice to Management

Keep an eye on how and why promotions are happening. Not everyone is a born leader and a business school degree shouldnt always be the trump factor...Take a look at the compensaiton packages your compettiors are offerring as they are substantially more and very enticing.
