I have been working at American Express full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Attracting new types of talent outside of the financial services industry. Many different products and services that meet new types of consumer/business target consumers (not just affluent). Investing in growth.

Cons

Layered and matrix organization. Top talent in global headquarters in specific business units/roles.

Advice to Management

Continue to invest in innovation and be comfortable going to market with product in earlier beta phases.

I have been working at American Express full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people here are still great - Smart, fun, competitive but not cut-throat. And diverse too.

    Cons

This is not the Amex I joined 5+ years ago. Everyone is expected to work longer, harder, with less pay and opportunities for movement. Morale is weak. Senior leadership in Finance is extremely demanding but for no good reason. Leadership does not know how to prioritize even though it's a constant focus. Many leaders are selfish and very focused on their own reputation/ego, pushing unnecessary work down to the teams . Work-life balance is now practically non-existent, although it is always a goal every year.

    Advice to Management

There are still lots of great and talented people in Finance that leadership is slowly pushing out of the company. The collaborative, relationship-building culture is being replaced with short-term, selfish attitudes. Management needs to open their eyes and see what is happening and really focus on their supposed goal of developing and retaining talent.
