I have been working at American Express full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

1. Everybody is assumed to be a master at their job. So if you are in a room ful of VPs, and it's your turn to talk, everybody pays attention, and respects your points. I have worked in Citi and WellsFargo before, and they would just crush you underfoot there.
2. The whole work-life balance? Life comes first - in many, many ways. If you have been an Amex card holder and have been treated nicely by their customer reps (happens all the time), then you can relate - that's the way they treat employees too.

Cons

It's a pretty large organization, so you don't get the personal attention you might want many times. I have never met anybody from the HR as yet! Have called them on the phone, but that's it. Similarly payroll, and other services.

It's a financial organization, so you have to put up with their paranoid sense of security - the laptop they give you is ultra-secure: you can't even download your own payslip to it. (The idea is that since the laptop is company property, if it holds your personal information, then the company is responsible for it, and they don't want it).

Advice to Management

Would like to see the face behind the name, some times. There should be more out-of-office get togethers, encouraged with central funding (as of now, Directors decide, and generally it doesn't happen).

    Pros

Great work-life balance and good positive culture

    Cons

Too much Political Correctness and effort spent trying to appease minority groups. Women and minorities tend to be favored for advancement

    Advice to Management

Pay and promote based on performance and ability - not race or gender.

I worked at American Express full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Loved the company and culture. Leadership is held accountable for regular team meetings and one-to-one's. Benefits are good including profit sharing and company match on 401k.

    Cons

Frequent restructuring and layoffs. Team leaders are not given enough training in leadership skills.

    Advice to Management

Employee development plans should be taken more seriously by leaders so that when it becomes necessary to eliminate some positions to make room for others, there would be a ready pool of internal employees to promote instead of letting good workers go.
