Pros

You really are working on things that are core to the business. Second to none training on how to rise in the corporate world and be a leader

Cons

Its a quintessential big Fortune 100 company that's been around for 150+ years with all of the issues that come with that.

Advice to Management

Become more innovative

I worked at American Express full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great reputation. The experience will look good on your resume.
They provide a good mentoring program.
Great opportunities to move around within the company after 2-3 years.

    Cons

You have to tow the company line at all time. It's a huge company with a very set policy and culture. If you cannot conform, you will have a tough time.
Very risk averse company. This quality is transferred onto functional managers and directors who will resist change or new ideas from employees.
    Lots of internal politics.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to new ideas from your top new recruits even when these ideas go against business as usual.

I worked at American Express full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fair pay. Advancement opportunities. Virtual positions available. Good benefits.

    Cons

Work life balance is difficult. Annual performance appraisal ratings are not always fair for departments with small staffs when everyone has excellent performance and ratings are required on a bell curve forcing many to receive unfair low ratings when in reality they excelled. Frequent reductions in staff.

    Advice to Management

Provide the ability to award appropriate appraisal ratings by allowing exceptions to the mandatory required number of low ratings. American Express has lost many, many talented employees due to the mandatory review spread of rating numbers required.
