I worked at American Girl full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Great compensation and benefits. Many friendly and talent co-workers.

Cons

Multiple, multiple levels of review no matter the project size. Highly corporate and uninspiring work place. Very structured, from complex processes (how to do your job) to when to be at your desk and even when to take lunch.

Advice to Management

Decide if you want the company to empower and educate young girls or if you want to continually squeeze maximum profit year after year. You can't do both. Moral is in the toilet in many departments. Consider who you allow to move up the food chain and if they really fit the mission.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at American Girl full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Many great benefits including medical, dental, vision, pet insurance, unlimited sick time, half days on Friday year round, lots of paid Holiday time off - including the week between Christmas and New Years paid time off, 3 weeks vacation after 5 years, lots of drawings to will stuff, treat days, and a big bag of American Girl and Mattel toys around Christmas time. The company is very involved with their community and also encourages their employees to volunteer. Producing a wholesome quality product to better young girls, and an amazing line of books and magazines is something to be proud of. Highly educated employees (many are women) that are smart, passionate, and determined.

    Cons

Having to sign documents restricting employees rights (i.e. confidentiality agreements, ridiculous amounts of training on workplace manners, extensive employee handbook, etc.). Not the most innovative company - spending too much on marketing and not enough on developing. Communication isn't always the best. The pay is about average for the Midwest. However, each department is very different from the next so each experience could be different as well.

I have been working at American Girl part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great place for women of all ages and experience levels to get a nice, fun, well paying job.

    Cons

Middle management lacks true experience managing people.

    Advice to Management

Train the sales staff more throughly as you do the leads and management. Create a system for informing sales staff as they report each day of changes in product availability and procedures.
