I worked at American Lung Association full-time

    Pros

Local charter offices run effective community programs and initiatives as staff trust each other and build up relationships. HQ is another story.

    Cons

I'll preface this by saying it used to be a great place to work with creative people and many opportunities. However, three major changes of management in less than ten years created a divisive environment where few really know where they stand. Senior staff are suspicious of each other, making life difficult for juniors who are often pigeonholed with little opportunity for growth. Expensive initiatives blew through the budget with almost no accountability. (The CEO noted has been replaced as of 2013, btw)

    Advice to Management

Your employees don't feel valued for their knowledge or performance and have little support or opportunity. Who wants to spend their work day looking over their shoulders and worrying?

I worked at American Lung Association as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Mission driven culture. Favorable organizational development in terms of human resources. Reputation/name sake.

    Cons

Non-profit is not a setting for everyone.
