I have been working at American Medical Response full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

-Great place to gain experience in emergency medicine.
-Most divisions run mostly 911 calls
-Its the largest private EMS company which means you can transfer locations and get deployed anywhere in the country if your an Emergency Response Team member.
-Good training program that helps people who are new to EMS
-They employ good EMT's and paramedics when compared to some private companies that are out there.
-They encourage employees to do whats best for the patient even if it hurts profits

Cons

-The local operations manager and general manager basically run everything at the local divisions so if your stuck with an incompetent manager then it is not a fun place to work.
-It is a very cooperate company so they make decisions that make the most profit.
-The pay and benefits is fair but it could be better
-The people at the very top only care about profits, so if your local GM runs the place into the ground just to make a few extra buts, his boss will see that as a good thing.

Advice to Management

They need to work towards advancing the private EMS industry. The general public hates cooperations and would rather have the public sector (ie. Fire Departments) run EMS, even if it is not the best option. If AMR is going to expand and grow they need to put more effort in changing the public's perception of private EMS.

I have been working at American Medical Response full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company as a whole is a good company to work for. Great team concept for most operations. On a corporate level, The company cares a great deal about their employees. For the most part work shifts are not bad unless you work 24 hour shifts. Good company values, good benefits. Senior Management (Corporate level) is great. Some operations are part of a union.

    Cons

Poor pay, no room for promotion or advancement unless your a medic or already in management. Some operations are terrible to work for, as ops manager do not appear to care about employees, only MONEY! Small operations work with old and worn out equipment. Understandable to a point but after an ambulance has 250,000 miles on it, that unit should be replaced. They demand a great deal from you as an employee with no personal recognition.

    Advice to Management

Each operation is different but for the most part you should care MORE about your employee's and their well being. LISTEN to what field staff have to say and recognize employees, in person for a job well done. Provide a much better mental health program in recognizing staff members who may need to talk about bad calls or over stress related issues. Allow supervisors to give their input on hiring new employees. Be more selective in hiring operation managers who can relate to what field staff deal with on a day to day basis. Offer better incentives for FTO's, Safety officers and Business development employees. Let your employees know you care more about them, than money! Improve overall operation communication on a one-on-one basis. Don't be so cheap! Pay more for what field staff do.
