I worked at American Psychiatric Association full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Nice offices in convenient location near DC in VA

Cons

I worked with many organizations but this place is the most unfriendly environment I've ever encountered--especially concerning directors who will not acknowlege long time employees for their dedication and accomplishments. A number of the directors and managers obtained their jobs by knowing the right people and not by academic credentials, excellence or experience. Incompetence is rewarded as evidenced by large compensation to executive staff while most employess receive substandard compensation. There's little advancement opportunities and don't even think of approaching HR about ANY issues, problems or concerns--speak up about anything and you will probably loose your job. This "mental health" association does not care about the health of their employees and fire without cause and at will. Stay away from this place unless you are really desperate for employment.

Advice to Management

Value your support staff and treat employees with respect. Start with a simple "hello" instead of acting as if you don't know your association's co-workers. Handle yourselves in a professional manner and nuture a mentally healthy workplace instead of relying on intimidation and fear to quell employees concerns.

Care little about employees. Director of section refused to take responsibility for mistakes and would blame the staff for any errors he made.

    Advice to Management

Look at upper managment and maybe your staff would stay longer and the departments would run smoother.
