I have been working at American Red Cross full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

The Red Cross possesses an amazing mission and going to work everyday knowing what you do is saving lives is what's kept me here.

Cons

Management expects people to take on 2, 3, even 4 different roles at a time with no salary bump. Their leave policy in my division is this: the only excusable leave is bereavement leave. They are highly lacking in the communication department causing great confusion/frustration. In the past when you worked for a non profit you expected lower wages but the benefits made up for it; this is no longer the case at the Red Cross.

Advice to Management

The job market is turning around (albeit slowly) and at some point you are going to need to start treating your employees better. Improve communication.

I have been working at American Red Cross full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The American Red Cross has a wonderful mission and their branding is known around the world. PTO policy is the only positive employee benefit.

    Cons

While recognized as a humanitarian organization, they treat their employees horribly. This organization strips you of your work ethic and degrades your skills. Very wasteful of the resources they have and not open to very simple changes to improve. A very negative and dysfunctional environment to work in. A revolving door and most of those going out are key talent that management should strive to retain. Poor health benefits; horrible management who are unable to effectively lead - a total disappointment as an employer.

    Advice to Management

A good manager always hires the best and brightest. The management at ARC isn't the brightest at the top so they continually hire dumb and dumber all the way down the management chain. Appreciate the employees who are busy doing the work and carrying out the mission for they are your number one asset.

    Pros

Working with donors, decent starting pay, most workers are very caring

    Cons

Excessive travel, irregular hours and sleep

    Advice to Management

Management needs to deal with issues when it's brought to their attention rather than bury their head in the sand and ignore the problems.
