I have been working at American Red Cross full-time

Pros

Worked with very experienced professionals. Great benefits. The entire leadership team has put lots of investment in modernizing the entire brand and workplace.

Cons

You can always experience long hours during a disaster, but this is nothing new. Also, as a nonprofit, you know it's going to be difficult to offer competitive salaries.

I worked at American Red Cross as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Generally pleasant experience with the folks at our chapter
They are good at mobilizing community volunteers, which is always helpful in a nonprofit

    Cons

Bureaucracy that dictates vast changes that often make no sense at the ground level
Top-down corporate management style with little consultation with boots on the ground
Promotion of people who play well with upper management rather than those who are most efficient at their jobs

    Advice to Management

Consult and listen to local leadership more. Despite your many years of experience as a corporate executive, these chapter leaders know more than you do about their community's demographics and the day-to-day realities in the field.
