I worked at American Red Cross full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Humanitarian mission, prestige and name-recognition

    Cons

Management out of touch with reality and always demanding more and more of staff. Constant cost-cutting measures (to the point of no longer being able to purchase kleenex) included repeated restructuring/reduction in labor force with remaining skeleton staff expected to pick up the pieces. Constantly changing protocols and procedures. Dinosaur computer systems.

    Advice to Management

Keep good people, fire bad ones. Hold management accountable for results and employee satisfaction. Give better merit increases to people who deserve it (3% of nothing is still nothing!). Cut back on needless bureaucracy and paperwork. Stop the consolidation madness or you will lose all of your core people to exhaustion and frustration. Get rid of BITs. Make the investment in contemporary computer systems. STOP DOING THINGS THAT DON'T MAKE SENSE.
