Pros

Better benefits, as far as insurance, and PTO. They do like to remodel their buildings, and update staff training timely.

Cons

Very minimal staffing (as far as nursing) in their facilities with no overtime allowed. The nurse/patient ratio is very high. Poor communication between the company consultants and their buildings, and among the consultants themselves, causing a great deal of confusion and misunderstandings for many. Be aware that therapy is the focus for this company, not the nursing dept- which depending on your own focus, may be good or bad.

Advice to Management

Please listen to your staff. Each of the buildings you "take over" are different. Place your consultants in the building to shadow, to really see what will work in each building- no formula will work in every situation. It seems like it would be hard to make effective suggestions when they are only in the building 2 hours here and 2 hours there. Please be honest with the staff, and follow through with what you say you will do. That builds loyalty- not money and gifts. Most of all- please always put the true needs and requests of the residents in your buildings first. They are the reason you have a company and a job.

    Pros

American Senior Communities pays roughly the same as other nursing homes in the area with average health insurance. They have a large number (40+) locations at which to work.

    Cons

They understaff in both nurses and aides so there is constant stress and high turnover. If management doesn't like you, they'll find something for which to fire you.

    Advice to Management

It is a for-profit chain so there is nothing that they could do to improve that would not decrease their profits.

I have been working at American Senior Communities full-time

    Pros

Being able to serve the elderly population. Working with talented people.

    Cons

The staff/patient ratios, this is a problem at any facility anywhere. You cannot take proper care of someone when you have 15 people to take care of.

    Advice to Management

Talk with your floor staff. They are the backbone of facility, try to institute some of their ideas and if you can't let them know why. Do not act as your above them because you are not.
