I have been working at American Society of Clinical Oncology full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the brightest, most committed colleagues I've had the pleasure of working with are at ASCO. It is a volunteer-driven organization, which has its pros and cons.

    Cons

Shifting priorities sometimes make it difficult to manage your work. Not much opportunity for job advancement once you get to a certain point.

I worked at American Society of Clinical Oncology as a contractor

    Pros

The company is filled with people who want to make a difference in cancer care. Many of them have touching experiences that involve themselves or a loved one. It's humbling to work with them along with others who feel just as compelled to make a dent in fighting cancer.

    Cons

For an organization that should have a compelling mission ("making a world of difference in cancer care"). That does not distill in the work experience where, particularly in IT, the focus is on budget, getting something within a release schedule, and pleasing management.

For an organization with so many overworked developers and project managers, the product is third-rate. Working hard and long is prioritized over working smarter.

Good management is about hiring great people, giving them autonomy and goals, provide inspiration, then getting out of the way. This is not how things work at ASCO.

ROWE is a mistake. Good companies are collaborative spaces where brilliant ideas are born. Instead, remote working and the constant barrage of meetings is where good ideas die, competence is demonstrated, and digression the norm.

    Advice to Management

Hire thoughtfully, pay well, motivate and inspire, let staff take ownership, be there to advise but don't stand in the way.

    Trust your employees.
