Pros

American Well has an excellent and talented team of developers, they are in an interesting sector within the technology field, and they use a common stack of technologies (e.g. Spring, Hibernate, etc.). Generally there are many opportunities to work on new and interesting projects, including iOS and Android mobile platforms.

Cons

The development process is rigid, despite arguments to the contrary there isn't a lot of value placed on addressing problems in infrastructure that have existed for years, often making bad code worse as it is maintained by more and more developers. Most of the value is placed on highly visible features and backend changes and improvements weigh less heavily.

Additional concerns are the lack of regular reviews and substandard benefits for a technology corporation.

Advice to Management

Your developers are this company's lifeblood. Take a look at the market for the greater Boston area and recognize that, unless salaries are more competitive and benefits revisited you run the risk of a crisis wherein developers will leave for better opportunities.

Beyond compensation, development and release life-cycles have grown too long. Focus on more releases with fewer features to get releases out to QA and customers quicker.

    Advice to Management

Get your act together and start acting like adults! The way the company runs and the way that management conducts themselves is an utter disgrace. Hire a consulting company or outside counsel for advice on how to get the company in order.

    Executive Management:
    - Be kind and act like leaders - coach your staff, encourage ideas and stop being so petty.
-Some management should clearly NOT be management - stop promoting without merit. And if there is new management, provide training for these new managers.
-Show some respect & be professional. Senior management should not be acting degrading and disrespectful towards one another in public forums, nor should emails of this nature be circulated.
-Bring in some fresh blood opposed to the management that has been in place since the beginning of AW. Times have changed and people need to as well!

    Sales:
    - Stop selling features that the product does not have so that the implementation teams suffer!

    HR:
    - Improve onboarding processes.
    - Improve communication and counsel for employees experiencing issues.
    - Conduct true exit interviews and off boarding.

    Overall
-Formulate a strategy and ensure that all personnel are marching to the beat of the same drum. With no shared goals, teams are not aligned and do not work together well!
