Pros

One of the only places in Silicon Valley where you can do scientific engineering work and be well paid. Capital equipment for semi and display is in a strong position that isnt' going anywhere soon. You may get lucky and be able to work on truly cutting edge stuff. Chance to impact future of semiconductor, display, or other technology world.

Cons

Older workforce and a lot of institutional inertia. Young people get chewed up quick and there are many layers of management that are pretty much useless. Many many directors and middle managers overseeing a small number of overtaxed engineers doing menial tasks.

Advice to Management

Try something different. The merger with TEL is a good start. Think bigger, though.

    Pros

Applied is a large, global technology and manufacturing company. Many opportunities exist within technology, engineering, operations, and manufacturing. Compensation tends to be very competitive.

    Cons

Growth has been within existing markets as well as through acquisition of smaller companies. As a result, the organization is very matrixed. In some parts of the company, it can be difficult to have a clear understanding of the proper peers and stakeholders.

As part of the semiconductor and high-tech industries, Applied is subject to large business cycle shifts up and down. This can lead to quick changes in operational mentality and organization structure.

    Advice to Management

Applied is in the middle of a multi-year merger with some of its largest competitors. The merger of global employees and cultures is a major endeavor. Applied should take care to keep communicating and make sure employees understand their role in the transitional and long-term organizations.

    Pros

Divers benefits including stock grants and profit sharing

    Cons

Large company with a lot of turnover in executive and upper management. Vision and strategy change too frequently for employees to embrace so they mostly ignore the noise and work heads down instead of working for a common goal.

    Advice to Management

When you make decisions and strategic changes, allow the employees to embrace the vision. This takes time and effort in evangelizing that vision. If you change things every 6 months employees learn to ignore you.
