I have been working at Applied Materials full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

For an engineer, the technical challenges and problems are very interesting. There is always room to contribute ideas, make things better and make an impact regardless of your position in the company if you're willing to put in the time and energy into it. Great company to start of as an NCG.

Cons

Promotions are not forthcoming unless you sacrifice a lot of time on projects on management's radar. Work-life balance takes a terrible toll. Career development seems to hit a plateau after 5-8 years. Perks and benefits gradually reduced over the years if you're not in management.

Advice to Management

Go back to the core values that made Applied Materials what it was in its heydays. Don't be afraid to innovate and build things. Lead rather than follow. Take care of your employees, try to retain your best employees and do it like you mean it.

I have been working at Applied Materials full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are many different technologies to work with, each providing their own challenges. There is plenty of opportunities to be innovative and to be recognized for your hard work.

    Cons

World wide support makes collaboration difficult, time consuming, as emails are exchanged or participating in the midnight teleconference.

    Advice to Management

Some groups are inherently more difficult to work in than others, therefore pay should not be simply determined by rank/rating but also include a disfunctionality coefficient.
