I have been working at Army and Air Force Exchange full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Stable company, pays well starting out but salary competitiveness tapers off for most fields once you receive a few promotions.

Great benefits and one of the few companies that still has a pension.

Family values, decent work/life balance, have been treated very well.

Gym, convenience store, and several restaurants on site at HQ building.

Cons

Management likes to move everyone around constantly so there are never experts on anything and everyone is always learning a new job. Most upper management has been here 20+ years and does not have a good grasp of how things are done in the "outside world" or how to make changes that appeal to a younger generation.

HQ building is falling apart with no plans to relocate and is located in a terrible part of Dallas, requiring at least a 30-40 minute commute if you don't want to get robbed.

Because of HR/union/government rules, once a person has been here more than a year it is extremely difficult to fire them. There are a large number of completely unqualified employees who keep getting passed around but should be fired instead.

For someone joining the company with a bachelor's degree, career progression stalls pretty substantially after the first couple promotions.

Advice to Management

Create more paths for development and grow experts instead of shuffling everyone around constantly. Relocate to a less dangerous area, allowing people to live closer to work.

I worked at Army and Air Force Exchange part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It gives you a chance to work with the military and provides some stability in hours due to it being affiliated with the government. I loved working there and it was very fantastic!!!!

    Cons

I worked every single weekend. it would have been nice to have a rotating schedule because there were some people who always got a weekend day off and it wasn't fair to everyone else in the store
