I worked at Artech Information Systems as a contractor (More than a year)

Pros

Reasonable attempt to meet salary and or rate of pay requested.

Cons

Takes too long to have payroll and Artech sponsored 401K issues resolved. The employment agreement also contained language that stated that consultant would be paid ONLY $10 per hour for the first 30 days of work due to payment terms imposed on Artech by their clients. I negotiated this out, as well as the non-compete clause's duration post employment. The reduction of pay due to client payment terms and Artech's cash flow problems are NOT the fault or the problem of the consultant and should NOT be made of any E.A. The Artech agreement is very lopsided in favor of Artech and most IT consultants, who may NOT be contract savvy simply sign them. DO NOT DO SO without a full and complete review. NEVER AGREE to the up-front wage rate reduction, the Proprietary Information clauses or Non-Compete clauses WITHOUT a complete review. Non-Compete clauses ARE ENFORCEABLE at Law in NJ if a court deems them reasonable as to duration and geography. READ THE AGREEMENT BEFORE YOU SIGN IT!

Advice to Management

If you offer a 401k and a consultant qualifies to enroll, insure that they are enrolled in as timely a manner as possible. Also, remove the negative pay language for the first 30 days of employment wherein Artech withholds MOST of the hourly rate(s) agreed to.

    Pros

The people working at Artech are smart, hard-working, and skilled, but low salaries and poor directions by upper management hinder their growth and cause a high turnover rate.

    Cons

    - Long Hours and Little Compensation: Employees have been told that they cannot eat lunch together and are influenced to eat lunch at their desk instead. Salaries are well below market value and working hours are much longer than a 8 hour work day.
    - High Turnover Rate: No one ever stays at Artech. The moment they realize what a bad situation they are in, they start looking for a new position.
    - Unrealistic Targets: Sometimes 5 or 6 times higher than what has ever been achieved. Bonuses will be based around this so they are never received.
    - Poor Direction Provided to Off Shore Team: The turnover rate in the India office is much higher than in the U.S. and mainly new college graduates are hired so there is a constant need to train people with no work experience on a constant basis. Candidates constantly are frustrated by the communication difficulties they have speaking with the employees in India and receive emails that are grammatically incorrect.

    Advice to Management

Pay market rate salaries and value your employees. Having a great group of people working for you that are knowledgeable and skills is much more valuable than having a revolving door of unexperienced people that are hired in an attempt to save some money.
