I worked at Atlassian as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

Amazing benefits and perks. Very spacious and beautiful office, games, free sandwhich bar and ready made food, 3 kegs on tap, yoga on site, etc.

Also very open office culture - only glass walls, you can always walk up to anybody. Executive team sits in the pit - accessible to all and not sitting above the employees.

Cons

Time Zone difference between Sydney and San Francisco office can require off-hours meetings late at night or during the very early morning.

It can be difficult to seek privacy and quiet without seeming secretive. Introverted employees might have issues in this environment if they preferred their own office.

The total open office culture leads to employees wearing head phones all the time and isolating themselves acoustically from the crowd. That hinders collaboration again.

Advice to Management

Keep the spirit going and try your best to maintain the culture as the company grows further.

I worked at Atlassian full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice, centrally located offices with a good vibe among (most) employees

Good stepping stone to start off a career in the software industry

    Cons

Middle and senior management is mostly clueless and inadequate to the tasks they are supposed to be fulfilling, often covering up their own missteps with demeaning and retaliatory behavior towards staff and customers.

Indeed they once had a thriving, much ballyhooed company culture. Nowadays you'll find it runs rife with micromanagement, favoritism and unsavory business tactics.

    Advice to Management

Your startup days are long over, get rid of the bobble head approach to running the company. Senior staff and management that are known to be incompetent or of questionable character should be laid off. Build a team with the experience needed. Promote from within, there are / were some real gems among staff.
