I worked at AutoNation full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Compensation was good, although the final salary offer presented was reduced from the amount agreed upon. Significant amount of bonus was eliminated from pay plan for two years making the undercut a harder pill to swallow. Opportunities to learn additional competencies and skill sets, mentorship from others willing to invest the time.

Cons

I boldly lied to and brushed off, given work well below my capabilities and set up for failure the last 6-8 months by "trusted" Supervisors/Management.

Advice to Management

You can't take it with you and much forgiveness and penance is the only thing that will save your souls for the severed relationships and countless lives that were destroyed.

    I have been working at AutoNation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    There are a handful of nice people working alongside you. Most of the customers are good, decent people, simply looking to buy a car and be treated respectfully and professionally through the process. Otherwise, there are no redeeming qualities about this company whatsoever.

    Cons

    1) They lie to get you interested in working for them.

    2) They set false income expectations.

    3) They operate with a "shoot from the hip" management style. Despite all of the processes they have, there is no structure in the way the dealerships operate.

    4 ) If you happen to earn a decent income for a given month, expect to have to work even harder to match it the following month. Pay plans change as often as the weather.

    5) Forget about having any kind of life outside of the dealership. Work schedules mean nothing. Expect to be there until very late at night, often past midnight.

    6) There is a culture of "playing the blame game". More time is spent pointing fingers and making accusations and assumptions instead of making deals and taking care of customers.

    7) Their training is meaningless. Trainers (who are nothing more than overpaid hacks who were miserable failures on the job when THEY were in the dealership) spend more time trying to indoctrinate employees than actually working with them to help them sharpen and enhance their skills and actually perform at optimum levels.

    8) To say that employees are micromanaged is an understatement. There is no room or tolerance for independent thinking. Any individual initiative to facilitate any type of improvement is perceived as a threat. In other words, if you work for AutoNation, you have to be a Stepford Wife.

    9) Corporate earnings are going up while employee earnings are going down.

    10) The company will seize any opportunity to short-change you on your income. They will come up with an encyclopedia of excuses.

    Advice to Management

    1) AutoNation needs to recognize that the key to success and growth is the people who work for you, and depend on you to support their families. It's very easy to see that this company really doesn't care about them.

    2) While the company ultimately has to answer to shareholders, the shareholders will see even greater dividends if you invest in high-caliber, professional quality personnel rather than order-takers who can't properly fill an order at a fast food drive-thru.

    3) Stop trying to re-invent automotive retailing. You're destroying it. People can no longer make a decent living because of the way you operate. You have customers who know more about the cars they're buying than the so-called professionals you have in your employ.

    3) Stop bragging about your training. It sucks. Your training isn't "proprietary". It's the same recycled rubbish that other companies use. Companies who have been around longer than AutoNation.

    4) If a commission is earned, PAY IT. Don't bamboozle your employees with accounting methods that Hollywood studios use to obscure profits on a motion picture. Not all of your employees are stupid or gullible.

    5) Remember that while some of you are spending your weekend on your boats, there are people working (SLAVING) until the wee hours of the morning to make your boat payments. No one begrudges you having these things, but remember you used to be working in your father's dealership, not knowing a spark plug from an ignition key, or cleaning wrenches for a mechanic.
