Former Employee - Parts Sales Manager (PSM) in Springfield, IL

    Pros

Given the number of Auto Zone locations around the country, chances are there is one that is close by so the commute to work isn't all that bad. The hours of operation are within reason, so long as your not working from open to close. I would say that the best reason to work for Auto Zone would be the on going training and the help in becoming ASE certified, even though there is no real incentive to do so other than self-satisfaction and the desire to better one's self.

    Cons

I think the biggest downside of working at Auto Zone is the fact that there are too many store level managers with an upper management that oftentimes has a different agenda than that at the store level. There is almost no accountability at any level. The management staff is well trained in micro-management techniques as far as additional sales and profit percentages, but unfortunately has no clue how to deal with the day to day human resource areas of the store. The communication and application of company policies is subjective at best.

    Advice to Management

Some advice to the leadership of Auto Zone:
    1. Apply the policies of the company evenly & fairly.
    2. Improve the level of accountability at all levels, from regular employees all the way up the management team.
    3. Listen and act on what your team members are telling you when it comes to identifying a problem area.
    4. Make sure that your regional HR managers are familiar with the labor laws for each and every state in which they have employees.
    5. Pay attention to attrition rates in areas, this is usually an indication of an upper management person or team that has gotten off course.
