I have been working at Avaya full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Some great projects to work on, lots of interesting technical challenges.
Excellent salaries in general.
Lots of great people to work with, both technically and socially.
Management is working to stay a market leader in their core telecom specialties with
the purchase of Nortel and recently Radvision and trying to introduce new technologies when possible.

Cons

Avaya has been constantly downsizing/rightsizing since they were spun off from Lucent.
Lots of outsourcing and off-shoring and that still continues through the end of 2012 when
I was finally rightsized out.
Avaya has done very little hiring at all since it was born.
So the workforce is aging but, interestingly, still staying fairly up-to-date technically.
Some projects are so large that it's difficult to use newer technologies and methods.

Advice to Management

Keep working to introduce new technologies when possible.

I worked at Avaya full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good base salary, there were some great leaders but they are all gone

    Cons

Those who survived the Nortel failure through political vs. business expertise are basically all that's left. The business is run on emotion and self promotion vs fact and fiscal responsibility.

    Advice to Management

Not worth the time, they won't listen

I have been working at Avaya full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The compensation is good. The products are good as well.

    Cons

The culture has become much more cutthroat. It used to be that everyone put the best interest of the company before themselves. Sadly, since going private, it has become quite the opposite i.e. very territorial and political. Work life balance continues to degrade as people leave the company with little to no opportunity to replace them. Tons of opportunity to improve, unfortunately those opportunities are often squandered.
