I worked at Avaya full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Fantastic salary, benefits, great co-workers, large company, growth, etc.

Cons

All companies struggle with profitability and where to find their profits.

Advice to Management

I would advise management to spend more on innovation and new products, as costs can only be reduced so far.

"A company with apparent hostility towards it's US and North American employees that is drastically shrinking itself."

I worked at Avaya full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The money was there, and the flexibility to work from home. The people left are still top notch, even if they are incredibly overworked.

    Cons

No career path or growth. No bonuses or pay raises. Quarterly staff reductions and "Enhanced Separation Packages" with yearly furloughs targeted only at the US employee base. Health benefits that were once decent and competitive are a joke now. There is no matching 401k as all matching (50% of the first 3% contributed) is tied to EBITDA numbers the company has never once met. Morale doesn't exist anywhere in the company. When the Senior Managers and Directors openly complain about how bad it is on conference calls, there is a serious problem and no one seems to care. Constant staff cuts and outsourcing has erased all loyalty to the company and put in place an "I don't care what happens to this place" attitude with the employees. Senior Management repeatedly acting like they know how to run our customers business better than they do as they force new processes and products out the door.

    Advice to Management

None. They don't care. They are biding their time for a buyout later this year.

I have been working at Avaya full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good compensation. Depending on location/manager possibility to work remotely. Great people (but keep leaving). Growth opportunities - vertically & horizontally.

    Cons

Constant cuts - now people work for four. Long hours (12 is a norm) are expected. Sr. Mgr and up - weekends are expected. A lot of talk about work-life-balance that just a talk. A lot of people are leaving. Worsening morale. Furloughs. No bonuses. Not a lot of team building activities due to budget cuts. No training - self learn with very short learning curve expected. A lot of activities moved to India- with low quality work that needs to be micro-managed and checked and re-checked while there is a perception that "now you have more time to work on other things". Bought Nortel business and put a lot of it's leadership into current roles - really?? Very top-heavy.

    Advice to Management

Choose leaders carefully. Cut from the top. If furlough - at least at summer. Realize that productivity improvements can't go forever - people are burning. Can expect the same amount of output with the same quality with so much less people. Acquisitions - re-evaluate assumptions and acquire more carefully.
