Pros

Good place to work for if you want publications. People working there are generally knowledgeable about what they do and willing to help.

Cons

There is no office culture. They really don't pay their staff very well. Place is very hierarchical, if you don't have advanced degree, there is no room for advancement

Advice to Management

I don't think they ever thought of good office ambiance, probably don't even know what that is! Management is incompetent, maybe some new blood might help?

I have been working at BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    a. Job is as easy as you want it to be - usually it's a standard set of techniques, but you are free to apply complicated methods. You are practically free to suggest and perform any sort of analysis.
    b. Lots of publications. You are usually involved in around 30-50 projects per year and the results will be most likely published.
    c. Very nice and respectful coworkers, staff and PIs. I am actually surprised by the amazing working environment.
    d. Easy to go on conferences/workshops - this organisation has a great budget for those.
    e. Weekly presentations / workshops / journal clubs with free lunch.
    f. The schedule is very flexible - you are free to decide your schedule as long as you work 7.5 h/day and perform your duties.

    Cons

    a. No career growth unfortunately. You can grow as a project coordinator to become a PI if you're in medical studies; but it is extremely difficult to grow as a statistician or data analyst. But it is still possible to become a Sr. with time.
    b. The new location is not the best location in the city.
    c. The job is hard on your nerves sometimes: it is not easy to deal with the subject of the research emotionally. But you cannot help everyone.
    d. Sometimes job is very plain - applying the same methods all the time.
    e. Don't expect your pay to go up.

    Advice to Management

Allow your team to grow in terms of career, manage data better, structure the workflow in more organised manner (from data collection to publications).
