I have been working at BD full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

good building facilities for employees

Cons

Very BAD or pathetic environment for new comers or new hires or experienced employees.
Company is full of old population with Old school mentality and un realistic perception and behavior, especially in Global Security IT team. Many Many employees with no exeperience and out dated skills in their current field are still working there for 13+ years because of their verteran connections to IT management.

Extremely unfair and untrustworthy treatment to new hires and to young employees in their 40s eventhough they are more experienced and qualified than older employees workng in their confort zone for 10+ years. The older employees do not want share anything with new hires or come out of their confort zone and does not want to accept reality. Some of them never got promoted for 13+ years in Global security team and still working & screwing around with others with extremely rude behavior. Managers are not doing anything about it.

Do not recommend to any experienced candidate to work at this place, especially in Global Security team. Good place for Junior or interns. Terrible ..Terrible environment in Global Security team.

Advice to Management

IT Management ajd HR leaderhship team needs to remove or lay off old employees (with no skills and experience as well as unacceptable behavior issues ) from company if they want to improve working environment.

I have been working at BD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good reputation.
    Good people.
    Consistent wall street performance.
    Good benefits (?). (see below)

    Cons

Very conservative business culture. Can get bogged down in processes.
Although they like to think so, they really aren't on the cutting edge of technology. Need new R&D blood (in Maryland). Product development choices are made for most inexpensive option that end up costing company, service and customer after product release.
Work / life balance is nonexistent.
Working to change the culture under new "Delta" initiative, but they have a long way to go. Past change initiatives never changed much of anything.
Benefits have recently devolved. This is last year anyone can retire under traditional pension plan. I think that for a company whose motto is "Helping All People Live Healthy Lives", the healthcare benefits should be top notch, not just "good".
As others have stated, career opportunities are limited unless you manage to latch on to a good mentor (and they are few). Learn here, go elsewhere to advance and use what you learned. (or suck up to someone)
Programs in place to help employees get a Bachelor's degree, and if you're in Sales or Marketing, can get assistance with MBA. $$ to attend scientific conferences and professional meetings are usually the first things cut EVERY YEAR when they do mid-year finance reviews.
Employee moral can be very low - especially with the ever cyclical RIFs and need for remaining employees to take up the slack.
Extremely prevalent Glass Ceiling. Number of females in top level management positions has DECREASED over last five years. Lots of 50-ish men in gray suits.

    Advice to Management

Examine top heavy management throughout the organization. (What's with all the new VPs added recently?) Go forward with trying to be innovative (Delta), but make sure it is being executed at local level. You have many great employees that can get discouraged. Pay attention to them, not just your senior level yes-MEN.
