Pros

Informal flexible work arrangements are allowed. I can work from home every so often to make sure things get done and to avoid unnecessary trips to the office. Have a decent amount of public clients in the office which present significant learning opportunities.

Cons

Only certain offices have industry specialization teams. There is a lack of timely feedback and not enough information given regarding client assignments. Travel requirements are very unequal and compensation does not reflect this in any way.

Advice to Management

Partners and managers in each office need to be less accusatory of seniors and how they aren't working enough. There are only so many hours in a year.

    Pros

At the local level it's small, easy to fit in. The software systems, except for a few, are easy to use and help complete the job. Mid-tier is challenging and there's an awful lot to learn. If you put your head down and work you'll probably do pretty well.

    Cons

Despite the fact that the firm has been around for 80+ years, the name is not well-recognized by either potential clients or potential employees making networking and recruiting difficult. There's an "every man for himself" type of culture throughout, senior to senior, manager to manager, partner to partner, but especially across business lines. So much so, that I've even heard one partner in one business line refer to others in another business line as "competition". Most business lines don't even know the names of the other employees across business lines and have no clue about what they do. Probably typical of all mid-tier firms, there's an overall sense that the firm just follows the lead of the Big 4.

    Advice to Management

I think Senior Management should focus on building the BDO Consulting group. The firm seems to be in the constant quandry of "chicken or the egg" - "do we get the business or the staff first?" There's also little incentive for any of the business lines to share staff due to the revenue assignments; therefore, one group sits idle while the other is swamped and vice versa. It seems an obvious change is needed and really silly to be wasting resources.
