I have been working at BGC Partners full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

This place hires relatively young people and relatively old away from larger firms who want a big pay bump for middle or back office jobs. It will also take a chance on the laid-off. So great if you need a jump in pay or just a job. For like two years.

Cons

After two years you realize that for you and EVERYONE ELSE in the back or middle office, you first year total comp is basically your total comp forever. They NEVER give raises or big bonuses to ANYONE who is not a revenue generator no matter how hard or little you work. So you end up with 3 kinds of people who have worked here 2+ years: those who quite and find a new job, those who work JUST hard enough to NOT get fired, and the bitter ones. There are no other types here.

Advice to Management

They will never listen or care. I know, I have heard it from the horse's mouth. But what they obviously should do is give higher raises and/or bonuses to the hard workers and fire the lazy ones, and do nothing for the middle ones. But here all three get the same, good year or bad. While the top execs, per company filings, make far more than execs at any of their peer companies.

I worked at BGC Partners full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you know who to please and be a yes man to, you will succeed.

    Cons

Tech Management harbors nepotism and does not wish to make tough calls to ensure better work environment. Talks a lot about changing but does not have the guts to. You will work very hard for nothing. If you are good at something then everything will be given to you. There is no work life balance. I ended up working 12+ hours daily without overtime nor a thank you.

    Advice to Management

Learn to hold mid level managers/leads accountable for their deliverables. Mid level managers run their departments like their fiefdoms allowing their employees unlimited flexibility. Invest in employee education and dont treat them like commodity.

    Pros

Compensation is very good and gets better if you also add the facts of relaxed working hours of 9 to 5 for most of the year. Yes, you do get to stay late but like anything you have good days and you have then bad days. Being able to get home by 7 after putting in a 13 hour day (of which 4 hours are just for the journey to/from NYC downtown) is really a blessing IMHO!

    Cons

Getting to work on writing systems from scratch is next to none. Most of the time, the resources are directed to upgrade the existing code bases built by former others. Upgrading the technologies is normally a tough sell.
Management needs to be a bit more independent and also brave enough to take a direction of their own as well and not just do what they are told by London people.

    Advice to Management

Be brave when it comes to dealing with London and also spend a bit more money on upgrading existing systems and employee's technical skills.
