I worked at BHP Billiton as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

Pretty good pay and benefits. Everyone else is going through the same thing you are with mgt. 9/80 option is a cool swing.

Cons

They are much more impressed with themselves than their employees are with them. Do not expect to have a good work life balance. They talk it a lot but they do not walk it at all.

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay, Benefits, and challenging work. Work life balance is pretty good unless you are a manager. $2 lunches can't be beat. The micor managing culture is slowly fading away but there is a long way to go

    Cons

Company seems to have no real direction for where it wants to go. Very little success has been achieved in exploration to bring in new reserves. Management is too risk adversive and not willing to take chances on smaller plays. Only seem interested in the next big thing instead of stringing together moderate successes. Overly process oriented which prevents being a first mover into areas and finding the next big thing.

    Advice to Management

take some risk. remove the red tape and listen to your employess. They know what they are doing and how to get the job done. That is why you hired them.
