I worked at BNSF Railway as a contractor (More than 5 years)

Pros

I worked on BNSF's main campus, which is a great environment to work in. People are generally friendly, and I had what I needed to do my work.

Cons

One challenge is the clear divide of how employees treat consultants (generally looked down on). Some employees are downright rude to contractors. The company is heavily segmented and departments don't always get along well.

Advice to Management

Model the way more. Sometimes you push employees too hard, and good talent is leaving the company because work-life is difficult to balance.

I worked at BNSF Railway as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Employee benefits (May be - Not available for intern)

    Cons

Quality of the work is not at all a concern. Management micromanages and puts us under pressure every day and literally threats to fire us every chance they get. No learning for interns. Management is killing employee's innovation and thought process. Interns are being treated as slaves for employees/mentors.

    Advice to Management

Top level management has to communicate well with all level employees about their employee values. Managers should have regular one to one meetings with internship candidates and get feedback about their mentors.

I have been working at BNSF Railway full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. Weekends off and work from 0600 to 1400 during the week. You get your mileage paid and 28$ a day for meals. Once you get your seniority up you can hold a headquartered job and its all gravy from there!

    Cons

Working in maintenance of way includes quite a bit of travel. If you have a family this may not be the best department for you. If you are young, single and want to make some money you opportunities are abundant.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the way so the younger generation can take over.
