Pros

The benefits package (for administrative/supervisory employees) is well above-average. Vacation for clerical employees is notably less, but with the same medical/health/insurance benefits. Although most competent staff work longer hours, the required hours are few.

Cons

For every hard-working staff member, there is an incompetent one to 'balance out' their efforts. The 'good old boy network,' as at other large organizations, dictates who gets the best positions - competence and ability are seemingly opposing factors. Incompetent staff are nearly impossible to fire, requiring multi-year efforts to document a case while the offending staff continue to wreak havoc. (In one case, an embezzler was demoted - but given a full year under her old salary as time to adjust.)

If you can align yourselves with hard-working staff (and even have that luxury - some groups do not), you may be able to insulate yourself from the incompetence around you. However, low tolerance for internal politics or useless staff remaining on the payroll - seemingly paid to drink coffee, chat on their phones all day, and tinker with personal projects - will quickly frustrate you.

Advice to Management

Less demagoguery; more effort on real changes to affect student performance. Much ado is made about standards such as No Child Left Behind, for which the district is well-aware and well-practiced of techniques to game the system, such as teaching to the test. Performance of minority students is ignored, with an unwillingness by curriculum development management to admit the flaws are in the curricula, not the students.

I have been working at Baltimore County Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -The money is decent
    -Co-workers/other teachers are friendly

    Cons

All the administration does is try and cover up issues as opposed to handling them in the schools.
