    Pros

Working in retail banking, you gain a lot of experience in character building through meeting and working with different types of people. Dealing with difficult customers helps one understand how to leverage customer/relationship building tactics to appease an angry customer. These skills are valuable in strengthening personality traits and can be used in any industry.

    Cons

Below average salaries that don't make up for the type of work that is expected. Bonuses and pay increases aren't substantial enough to keep an employee there. Additionally, upper management assume that employees want a career in retail banking and thus don't provide the tools necessary for career growth. Some even lack the knowledge in how one can move from one area of the company to another. Very difficult to move from the retail side to corporate if that's where your interest lies.

    Advice to Management

Important to understand what an employee's ultimate career goals are. Even if one may not know the answer as to how you can help an employee get there, management should be willing to use their resources to help an employee take the necessary steps to advance their career.
