I have been working at Barclays full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are generally very nice.

    Cons

Global staff turnover has been very high in the IT dept I work (which has several hundred people at any one time). The level of IT near shore outsourcing has escalated to a great extent and working with teams who don't speak English as a first language is a huge challenge. The business doesnt value the importance of quality when it comes to building reliable, well engineered software and neither does the IT management chain which is incentivized to always cut corners to get the next delivery on the desk as soon as possible. This comes at the cost of never repaying technical debt so the software is forever descending towards an unmaintainable mess which delays delivery which in turn angers the business which in turn causes smart developers to seek employment elsewhere as dismal bonuses are paid.

    Advice to Management

There is a blight in the entire approach to building software applications. Turning around this ship is actually a cultural impossibility without deep introspection which will probably never come. But one can dream and I hate critiquing without giving sensible advice: 1) The business needs to get into the business of building software applications like a Microsoft, Google or Amazon...in other words, think about software as a genuine business investment that needs to be nurtured and prioritised. 2) Incentivize the IT management chain on delivery against quality metrics like unit testing and QA in an environment of continuous integration and continuous deployment 3) Disincentivize bad software practices like constant accrual of technical debt 4) Educate the business to make management aware of what business behavior hurts the software development process and therefore in turn the business itself.
