I worked at Barclays as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Very intelligent people, decent pay, interesting work, people are very competitive and will push you to be your best. Although work can extend late in the evening or on the weekends, working in NYC you can always expect people to be out on the street (even at 2 am).

Cons

Long hours, standard day from 7:30 am until sometime after 11:30 pm, people can be very competitive (pro and con)

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Barclays as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people that you work with are great. Most are extremely helpful and fun to work with. Most tools one needs are readily available. Middle management does the best they can to help despite a bloated and incompetent senior management.

    Cons

Senior Management, Senior Management, Senior Management
They create end dates for projects without asking for estimates from the people that actually carry out the projects. They do not want to spend the money to have a world class platform. It is an oppressive environment to work as you must work 12 plus hours per day to at least stay within a month or two of a poorly conceived date.

    Advice to Management

Talk to people a few levels below you to get a feel for duration of a given project rather than your current method.

I have been working at Barclays full-time

    Pros

    Very supportive immediate boss/manager.
A pretty family-friendly environment that supports work/life balance pretty well.
    Generally strong relationships with business.
New CEO seems to be the right person for the time.

    Cons

Infrastructure teams are very difficult to work with.
People openly put distance between themselves and other teams they need to work with.
The interaction with fellow employees in desks nearby is pretty minimal.
Local team interaction can at times be sparse and meetings only called to address fire drills or fires.

    Advice to Management

Keep an eye on the base level and ask individuals "in the trenches" what their challenges are.
Get infrastructure in line and stop over-doing the bureaucracy in getting things done through them.
Setup a system where any change that is scheduled to happen will automatically notify every dependent team involved early enough and provide a feedback loop.
