Pros

Barclays is a great place to build a career in the banking industry. The growth is very rapid and the opportunities are there. Their is constant expansion throughout the country with new acquisitions popping up left and right. Overall, it is a great place to work if you are motivated and work hard.

Cons

A downside is that some middle management is a little soft and some tasks could easily be delegated to other employees and done more effectively.

Advice to Management

Senior management does a great job of recognizing the work done by employees at all levels.

    Pros

Excellent firm culture; most people enjoy working together and achieving common goals; not too much of hierarchy, and easy to speak to these in decision-making positions; and overall, the people team is very good. There are also great benefits; volunteer opportunities; social events. There is gym. Always able to take time off when necessary.

    Cons

Sometimes too much of unnecessary paper-pushing that delays getting work done. Red tape needs to be reduced to a reasonable level. Management does not always take the time to really know what the subordinates need. Important issues like advancement and growth need to be addressed in more detail. People sometime not sure what they will get from the job down the road.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your subordinates more and try to understand what their needs and goals are, and how management can help achieve them for benefit of firm and the people.

    Pros

Salaries are in line with industry standards, and benefits are good, though somewhat more expensive than plans at comparable employers.

    Cons

non communicative management - they go through the motions, but not for important issues, such as outsourcing (200 people were outsourced to CGI, on the ides of March no less, and there are still no official announcements). Poor work/life balance, Rigid and unrealistic appraisal system.

    Advice to Management

Treat IT professionals as adults. If the intent is to outsource much of IT, and that appears to be the case, be honest and straightforward about it. You need to eventually in anycase, so we can do the obvious right things when it comes to turnover, access security, and planning our personal lives. Competent managers know who's contributing and who isn't, so trust people to know when they need to be in the office, and when they can work remotely, greatly improving work life balance
