    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Barclays full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Mostly great co-workers. BarCap employees themselves are great although the culture has soured since the Lehmen acquisition.
    - Clear promotion opportunities if you're not a graduate.
    - Great internship scheme - lots of training and networking events.
    - Good technology working groups, some managing directors are very switched on, especially in Equities.
    - Reasonable meritocracy for full time hires - although not within cookie cutter graduate positions.

    Cons

    - Typical of banking, most people are motivated by money and not love of their job.
    - Most graduates are on the same salary as new interns - even after having 1-2 years of experience.
    - Many graduates get sub optimal placement when joining teams which don't reflect their interests adequately. They are allocated according to 'business need' - but if the wrong part of the business needs a graduate, it can negatively affect your career.
    - Graduate scheme training is a waste of time and money for those not in front office. As a technology grad, give us actual technical training. A two day 'beginners Excel' course is not sufficient, particularly for the vast majority of technology grads hired from non-CS courses.
    - Internal mobility is a joke. Anecdotally - most people quit and are rehired at a higher salary.
    - Since the acquisition of Lehmen's - considerably increased management. When an intern I had 3 managers in between me and the CIO. As a graduate i had 7. What do these guys all do?
    - Technology is old, outdated and generally under invested in. They often refuse to spend a few hundred pounds on a workstation dated less than 4 years old (despite salaries being above market for most employees). Bizarre.

    Advice to Management

Sort out the graduate program. The only graduates who stay are those who lack the skills to leave. This culture is perpetuated by those in charge of the graduate scheme also being those graduates who never left. Bring some outsiders in, Goldmans, Morgan Stanley and others have much better run programs which waste less money on superfluous training and have a greater retention rate of good employees. Promote your graduates regularly and make sure they are rewarded for good performance. The best people from my program left or moved into front office. The remaining people are looking for jobs but lack the technical skills to move.
