I worked at Barnes & Noble part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Great people, great books, great place. Overall, it was a really positive working environment, and you could tell that the people you were working with cared as much about literature as you did.

Cons

The occasional bigot will come in asking where your Qurans are so they can burn one. They also really like you to sell sell sell the nook, which is exceedingly difficult to do when you're selling a $2 coffee to a book-lover.

Advice to Management

Don't push the nook so hard -- most people coming to B&N are more interested in books, not eReaders.

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Most of the supervisors and managers I experienced were good, caring people, with one notable exception. The first manager I worked for there was abusive, but he only lasted about two years before leaving the company. Employees who were laid off were given severance packages.

    Cons

Don't want to hire full time employees. Laid off employees over forty. Favored employees who were former Barnes & Noble, Inc. employees over those working for bookstores they took over.
