I worked at Barnes & Noble part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Almost every single employee, part-time or full-time, is passionate about reading and writing. Most managers have come up through the ranks and truly love the work. Customers are amazingly loyal and devoted to the principles of a community bookstore. Can't think of a workplace that has a better vibe.

Cons

For a public company beholden to shareholders, a bricks-and-mortar bookselling business model gets harder and harder to justify, even with a superior eReader in the Nook line. Among other consequences, Teen Paranormal Romance gets ten times the shelf space of Poetry.

Advice to Management

Partner up! Time is running out.

I have been working at Barnes & Noble part-time

    Pros

There's a great discount on the merchandise, with an increased percentage for the "employee appreciation week" that falls at the beginning of the holiday season. You can borrow hard cover books for two weeks. There is also a lot of flexibility in scheduling.

    Cons

There isn't really the opportunity to work full-time, and full-time would only be 30 hours as opposed to 40.

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Average employee is educated and fun to work with, really love my co-workers!

    Cons

Management does not care about their employees. Regional Management cannot make a good hiring decision for the St. Louis District Manager position to save their life. The Company makes a big deal about caring for their employees but it is just a front. Like most Companies they only care about profit...

    Advice to Management

If you take care of the employees they will take care of the Company. Follow your own Company Policies...
