Long hours on your feet the whole time, not that much down time, a lot of tedious (but necessary) shelving and organizing work

I worked at Barnes & Noble part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good employee discount. Learn a lot about publishing. Solid inventory management.
Increase knowledge of books. Acquired library skills.

    Cons

Pay is low for booksellers. Typical retail scale for salaries. Work is in a public space with large volume. Many late night hours. Great job to have if you love dealing with large volumes of product and crowded spaces. There is a lot of time standing on this job. And many of the tasks are labor intensive.

    Advice to Management

Allow greater flexibility regarding work hours. Increase the pay of booksellers. Shrink the size of the stores. Perhaps create stores that specialize in a category that has larger sales potential like Children's books. Cut back the operating hours to increase the potential employee pool. No one really likes to work in a bookstore until midnight.
