I have been working at Barnes & Noble full-time (More than a year)

Pros

The work environment is very laid back and most people are friendly. Work-Life balance is excellent.

Cons

Teams are often siloed and lack of knowledge sharing between teams. Thus, whenever a problem happens, a lot of people are notified unnecessarily which generates a lot of noise. also there doesnt seem to be clear direction from senior management.

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay was good for retail and the hours were not too bad based on other retail positions that are out there. The company also worked to change store hours when they just did not make sense from a sales standpoint. The employees loved books and everyone enjoyed working with customers to help find what they were looking for or offering suggestions.

    Cons

Employee payroll was always a challenge. There is a payroll system in place but it can be manipulated to shuffle hours around. The actual schedule is still not fully automated so that can be a challenge. The company has also struggled with the digital platform ereaders and has not found a way to compete with other tablet companies.

    Advice to Management

Work to fully automate the payroll system and ensure that the weekly/monthly planning tools are accurate and don't negatively effect payroll. Senior managers must also be aware of issues with District managers and identify potential issues before they become a large problem for the stores.
