I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Most employees respect the brand and are happy to work for the company. Management is old school and a little out of touch with modern employment practices. Access to books, and most stores are comfortable and clean.

Cons

Low pay, Company quick to pay employees minimum wage, and limit hours to 29 so as not to be responsible for health insurance.

Advice to Management

Hire some younger managers with new Ideas and don't be afraid to stick with what works.

I worked at Barnes & Noble part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The discount and the occasional cool customer.

    Cons

Verbally abusive management with unreal expectations and goals. They play favorites with employees worse than any job I've had prior to it. Management is unable to take any criticism and will lash out at their employees. They have actually forced out good employees by bullying them and with threats of firing and damaging any future employment opportunities merely based on whether they like a person or not.

    Advice to Management

Corporate needs to investigate various improprieties being committed by upper management before a class action lawsuit is taken up with the store.

I have been working at Barnes & Noble part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

30% general merchandise discount, 50% cafe discount. Flexibility in scheduling.

    Cons

No health benefits to PT. Very poor allotment of hours to employees. Very poor management of scheduling and requesting of time off. Poor peer review system with potentially once a year pay increases. Starting wages are poor for PT. Expected work load for any given day far surpasses the amount of hours and employees allotted.

    Advice to Management

Design a scheduling program so that employees can see their schedules on a PC. Push back against corporate when your employees aren't getting enough hours to live off of. I enjoy the general culture of B&N and would have made a career of it, but the company seems only interested in temporary / throw-away employees.
