I worked at Bay Area News Group full-time

    Pros

Good colleagues with a strong-sense of mission to journalist work Ability to write for a news organization that is recognized for being central to coverage of the San Francisco Bay Area A lot of talented reporters, editors, photographers, graphic artists, multimedia journalists and the like there, who are collaborative and very committed to their work

    Cons

A lot of economic uncertainty, since it's owned by a hedge fund. Lots of layoffs and buyouts People are overworked and feel underappreciated so morale is low, largely due to the economic insecurity of the newspaper chain Not a lot of openness to new ideas or approaches unless you happen to be part of a more select group of decision-makers at the San Jose Mercury News Can be quite hierarchical in its approach to allowing new and local reporters to produce front-page stories, preferring to allow regional or senior South Bay reporters get more high profile stories

    Advice to Management

Find a buyer that actually cares more about supporting quality journalism than the bottom line Quit focusing so intensely on story quotas aand ignoring newsworthy stories in important communities like Oakland, if they get enough web traffic Improve your delivery of the paper Show more appreciation for the efforts of your dedicated and overworked staff Lose your hierarchical approach to determining who gets front page stories, favoring always South Bay news, esp. now that everyone is stretched so thin through buyouts and layouts that there should be more of a level playing field for all reporters, even if they are from the East Bay or local reporters vs. so-called "regional reporters"

    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Bay Area News Group full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

One of the last real newspapers in the Bay Area

    Cons

Don't expect a raise and don't expect anyone to ever thank you for what you do, especially when dealing with editors in San Jose.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees like numbers. Occasionally ask yourself why you got into journalism.
