    Pros

Given the dire straits of this newspaper group -- and all those owned by the vulture hedge fund Alden Global Capital -- the only conceivable benefit of working here would be if you're an entry-level employee (ad sales reps, for example) needing some experience and don't plan on hanging around long.

    Cons

Relentless downsizing has left BANG with a skeletal editorial staff, far too few in number to produce the hyperlocal content many (now former) readers wanted. The constant threat of layoffs has created a fearful, toxic environment along with ever-increasing demands on the few reporters/editors/photographers left. 'Lean and mean' doesn't begin to describe this company that has so little regard for the backbone of its staff -- the content producers. The focus has shifted from covering individual communities to churning out stories that generate the most clicks and shares -- crime, fires and other assorted mayhem along with sweeping regional stories that have little or no relevance to specific markets. And for their efforts, the rank-and-file are rewarded with subsistence level wages.

    Advice to Management

Don't try putting lipstick on a pig: Publicly acknowledge the reality instead of trying to convince readers that they'll still be getting the same great product despite the bloodletting. No one is fooled.

    Pros

The people are nice and digital solutions are on-par.

    Cons

Management is based on activity, but it's tough to find a sales org that isn't.

I have been working at Bay Area News Group full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

One of the last real newspapers in the Bay Area

    Cons

Don't expect a raise and don't expect anyone to ever thank you for what you do, especially when dealing with editors in San Jose.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees like numbers. Occasionally ask yourself why you got into journalism.
