Pros

Multinational company with presence in very diverse industries
Great opportunities for career development and job rotation
Great geographical flexibility (you can pretty much plan to work in any country in the world)
Protective of its employees and their needs (great work-life balance opportunities)

Cons

Bureaucracy
Slow speed of decisions (and then changes to decisions)
Compensation practices could be better
Certain pockets still work through 'kiss-up-promotions' (sad but true!)

Advice to Management

Get rid of superfluous management layers (VPs and SVPs and GMs and all) and of steering committees (well, most of them!)
Empower employees for decisions and hold them accountable (don't allow 'delegating-up', don't re-discuss decisions taken)
Focus on actions than discussions and stick to the decisions
Communicate how current senior management has learnt from their failures (preferably at Bayer) to drive home the message 'love of winning than fear of failure'
Get the CAO organization in shape...most of them are just bean counters, absolutely useless as leaders!

    Pros

Bayer has accumulated great people from all over the CPG/OTC industry and put them together in one place. The culture is supportive and one can almost always assume positive intent. Great pains are taken to ensure continued employee growth and development. Random firings or layoffs are unimaginable, and the comapny reorganizations take place less frequently than at competitors and with less attrition.

    Cons

The great culture and low turnover allow the company to underpay vs other consumer pharma and make it more difficult to advance. Many departments are top-heavy. The company is slow to get rid of employees who are on the wrong bus, despite how obvious it may be to those around them.

    Advice to Management

Continue building the organization globally, but don't let the US organization plateau and/or wither or you will lose the talent pipeline. The personnel are already in place to build a much larger US operation, all that's needed are the right acquisitions.
